The Greenest Street in the World

The street Rui Goncalo de Carvalho is located in Porto Alegre—the capital of the most southern Brazilian state, Rio Grande do Sul. According to an unverified legend, the trees were planted in 1930.

Moreover, in the tree planting were not engaged the local people but employees of a brewery, most of whom were Germans. The total length of this street is about 1600 feet. We don’t know the exact number of trees, but it is assumed that there are more than a hundred of them. Some of the trees grew up to the height of the seventh floor. In 2005, the construction of a large shopping center there could’ve made some major changes to the street, but a campaign in support of the preservation of its original appearance saved the street. The residents think that Rui Goncalo de Carvalho is not only the greenest but also the most beautiful street in the world.
